Strengthening Elderly Resilience Through Physical Training in Earthquake-Prone Areas

Older adults are a vulnerable population who experience age-related declines in muscle strength, balance, mobility, and functional capacity. These conditions may increase the risks of falls, frailty, dependency, and difficulties in performing independent evacuation during earthquakes. This community service program aimed to strengthen the physical capacity of older adults through multicomponent physical exercise as an approach to enhancing resilience in earthquake-prone areas. The program was conducted at Home Care Facility, Saitama Prefecture, Japan. A participatory approach with a pre-test and post-test design was employed. The intervention consisted of education on physical activity for older adults and multicomponent exercise involving muscle strengthening, balance, flexibility, endurance, and functional exercises. Participants' physical capacity was evaluated using the Timed Up and Go Test (TUG) and the 30-Second Chair Stand Test, while the training was conducted with support from caregivers. The results indicated positive participant responses and increased engagement in physical exercises, along with improved understanding of the importance of maintaining physical capacity for emergency situations. The training also enhanced caregivers' ability to facilitate simple and safe physical exercises for older adults. This program demonstrates that multicomponent physical exercise can serve as a promotive and preventive approach to maintaining physical function, independence, and disaster preparedness among older adults living in earthquake-prone areas.
